Who am I?

My name is Michael Butler and I am currently studying for a postgraduate qualification in Politics and International Relations. I now hope to apply my diverse skill set to the field of Digital Media for which I have had an affinity from a young age. Being part of a new media generation I have experienced directly the ability for new media to both build and destroy companies. Individuals such as Tom Ferris have shown how an individual can use the blogosphere, and new media, to transport an almost unknown piece of work to the top of the times best sellers list. This presents an exciting, ever changing world which has been central to much of my growing life and which I wish to play an integral part of.

The skills that I have developed during my education provide, what I believe to be, the necessary background to playing an important role within a digital media agency. Throughout my life as an Ancient Historian I was required to produce an image of a society, its citizens, and what influenced them, with limited literature and archaeological evidence. It was during my undergraduate education that I became fascinated with social phenomenon, developing a desire to understand the influences behind people’s behaviour. My research and analysis skills, developed during this period, proved invaluable when I began to research social phenomenon during my Quantitative Methods course. In my assignment I analysed the relationship between media and public opinion in reference to the Iraq War. I believe this experience places me in a strong position for a position in a digital media agency. I have investigated deeply the effects on different media types on individuals, and believe this can be applied to the development of media planning and buying strategy.

I am aware that I have much to learn of the media and advertising world however I believe I have proven my ability to adapt quickly. Having moved from one discipline to another in my graduate education I managed to learn new skills and knowledge while maintaining a high level of work. An asset I believe vital for a career in a diverse and ever changing field, such as social research.
